How to safely transport the king size bed?

Strapping your mattress to the roof of your car is dangerous for you and everyone else on the road. Mattresses are heavy and if they aren’t strapped down securely enough, which is virtually impossible when you consider a car roof, you will have a heavy flying object beaming towards an unsuspecting car. You don’t want that. Your insurance doesn’t want that. Other drivers don’t want that. AND, the cops won’t take too kindly it either.

Now, putting aside safety issues, the mattress itself can be damaged in more ways than one. If you do secure the mattress tightly enough to avoid an accident, I can guarantee that there will be some damage to the wire frame around the edge. Even if you drove slow enough to avoid wind lifting the front of the mattress, which you can really only do if you’re moving a block or two down the street, the rope used to tie it down would cause a bend at each point of contact.

Further, depending on the type of mattress, if you transport it in any position other than lying flat, the materials inside will move, which will definitely mess up your sleep haven. Most new mattresses aren’t made of one single cushion on top of springs anymore. For example, Sleep Number Beds consist of foam pieces that can shift if you strap them to the roof of your car or leave them up against the wall of a truck for too long. You want to keep them lying flat, and stacked on top of each other if you are moving more than one.

If you are not hiring a professional mover, then rent a truck for your beds. You can rent one big enough to stack your beds inside for under twenty dollars plus the cost of gas. This price, compared to the price of potentially having to purchase a new mattress or, worse, an accident, is minimal.
